Over the course of the Cambridge waterfront project, editor Dave Wheelan of the Cambridge Spy and Angie Hengst, the board president of Cambridge Waterfront Development, Inc., will be using our long-form interview format to discuss the organization’s plans and progress on Cambridge Harbor to inform the community.
In this edition, Angie shares insights into the significant changes and progress happening behind the scenes, which might not be visible to the public eye just yet. The waterfront, previously occupied by the Dorchester Hospital, is already undergoing a transformation into a vibrant public space, starting with the Waterfront Park. This phase includes making the park accessible for public use, with infrastructure to support events like the kite festival.
Additionally, there’s a hotel in the works, pending final legal approvals. The development plan also includes a promenade, enhancing connectivity and public access to the waterfront. State grants, city funds, and future property sales support this phase. The goal is to create a space where the community can enjoy outdoor activities and appreciate the waterfront’s beauty.
The conversation also touches on a mural project that connects to Cambridge’s culture and heritage, aiming to welcome visitors with a vibrant depiction of the city’s history. As Angie notes, community input is a crucial aspect of this development, ensuring that the project aligns with local aspirations.
