Cambridge Time Machine: Picking up a Few Shirts at Garner’s

April 12, 2024 by The Cambridge Spy

Polish-born Dan Garner brought his clothing business to Poplar Street in 1891. He supplied local oystermen with oilskins, gum boots, and tarpaulin hats. The selection expanded to include other menswear, such as tuxedos. Garner died in 1957, and son-in-law David Jacobsen took over the business. He later sold it to Art Kamens and Stu Haring, the latter of whom was the sole owner when Dan Garner & Co. closed in June 2004.

Garners was a staple store for all the men in my family…father, 4 brothers then son! What a treasure to be able to order tux downtown for all their special occasions . Gift shopping was made so easy…. Amazing all the choices and sizes in the small store . Stu Haring was fabulous with access, alterations and such a great personality. He and Pat were great local couple .❤️
