Simmons Center Market was opened on September 7, 1937. It became the first grocery to offer self-service shopping on the Delmarva Peninsula south of Wilmington in 1945. One of the few Race Street businesses to serve African Americans during segregation, Simmons is among the oldest grocery stores still in business on the Eastern Shore.
