In the early 1700s, Col. Thomas Ennals built the manor house he called “Eldon” on a portion of his 3,000 acres of land on the outskirts of Cambridge. The house was closely associated with county and state affairs. Dr. Francis Phelps bought Eldon in 1836, but it burned down ten years later. He built a new one that became famed for its ballroom and boxwood garden. The second Eldon was destroyed by accidental fire in the 1960s, and the Cambridge Elks Lodge now occupies the site on Elks Lodge Road.
