Cambridge-Maryland Hospital was built in 1904 for $70,000, almost half of it from Cambridge native John Hurst. Dedication Day, November 17, was a holiday. On the porch overlooking the Choptank River, patients could get fresh air, especially helpful before air-conditioning. A nursing school was added soon after opening, and in 1914 a maternity hospital was built.
