Dorchester County is pulling out “all of the stops” this weekend, so many family activities to enjoy.
On Saturday, October 15, The Beckwith United Methodist Church’s Apple Festival runs from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM. The Apple Festival is a great stop for breakfast, snack, or lunch. The Apple dumplings are the best I’ve ever eaten. The flea market is a great place to discover that hidden gem that you didn’t know that you needed. The Neck District Volunteer Fire Company on Hudson Road is the location of the festival.
My next stop on Saturday will be Horn Point Lab’s Open House. This is Horn Point Lab’s first Open House in 2 years. Horn Point Lab is one of the largest oyster hatcheries on the East Coast. The faculty and students conduct research about The Chesapeake Bay. I’m excited to take my grandchildren as the ongoing discussion this past summer was about jellyfish. We hope to find some answers as it seemed as if there were more jellyfish this summer than any year before. There are two ‘hands on” activities that my family is excited about, building a healthy marsh and constructing a bracelet to match genetic codes. The Open House hours are 11:00 to 4:00. There will be food at this event.
The annual Kite Festival is Sunday, October 16 from 12:00 to 4:00 at Sailwinds Park on the Choptank River. It’s always an exciting event, the kites are huge and can be seen from blocks away. This year there will be a petting zoo and pony rides for the kids. Lil’ Bitta Bull BBQ will be the food vendor at this event.
Dorchester County has been designated a Heritage Tourism County and The Passport Tour is a great self guided way to see some incredible sights in our beautiful county. Stop at the Visitor’s Center at Sailwinds (next to the kite festival) to get more information and to pick up your passport booklet. There are 12 stops on the tour that take you all over Dorchester County. Handsell, which dates to the early 1600’s is the last stop to complete my passport. Handsell is the site of The Chicone Village Day and the Nanticoke River Jamboree.
Cambridge/Dorchester County continues to inspire me, we have so much history, so many exciting events to attend, and most inspiring of all, we have gorgeous water all around us.
