Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra Launches 27th Season with “Violin Virtuoso” Concerts

September 13, 2024 by Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra
Leave a Comment

The Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra proudly opens its 27th season as the Delmarva Peninsula’s only professional symphony orchestra with a concert series titled “Violin Virtuoso.” This series will be held from September 26 to 29 across three venues: Easton, Maryland; Lewes, Delaware; and Ocean Pines, Maryland.

Maestro Repper describes the upcoming season as one filled with “energy, passion, and excitement,” highlighting the inclusion of world-class soloists, timeless favorites, and rare opportunities to experience works by under-performed composers. “There is something for everyone at the Mid-Atlantic Symphony, and we look forward to performing for you,” Repper says.

The “Violin Virtuoso” concerts will kick off with three performances, showcasing a blend of dramatic and triumphant music. The concerts will feature Johannes Brahms’ Tragic Overture, Alice Mary Smith’s Symphony in A Minor, and Felix Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, performed by Grace Park, the celebrated winner of the Naumburg International Violin Competition.

Repper envisions the season-opening concerts as a journey from tragedy to triumph, starting with Brahms’ emotionally charged Tragic Overture and concluding with Mendelssohn’s exuberant Violin Concerto. Park, acclaimed for her artistry, passion, and virtuosity, will perform on a rare 1717 Guarneri violin. The San Francisco Chronicle has praised her as “fresh, different, and exhilarating,” making her performance of Mendelssohn’s concerto, known for its triumphant ending, a highly anticipated highlight of the series.

The concert series will also feature the rarely heard Symphony in A Minor by Alice Mary Smith (1839-1884), the first British woman to compose a symphony. Smith’s music, described by her contemporaries as “marked by elegance and grace … power and energy,” adds a distinctive and historically significant element to the program.

The “Violin Virtuoso” concert series will take place on:

Thursday, September 26, 2024, at 7:30 PM at Easton Church of God, 1009 N. Washington St, Easton, MD 21601

Saturday, September 28, 2024, at 3:00 PM at Cape Henlopen High School, 1250 Kings Hwy, Lewes, DE 19958

Sunday, September 29, 2024, at 3:00 PM at Community Church, 11227 Racetrack Rd, Ocean Pines, MD 21811

Academy Art Museum Announces 27th Annual Craft Show

September 10, 2024 by Academy Art Museum

This year’s 27th annual Academy Art Museum Craft Show will be held on October 26 & 27 with a Preview Event on October 25. The show will feature a wide array of juried exhibitors, including established artists, returning favorites from years past and many more artists new to the show. Participating artists create work in all media including Basketry, Ceramics, Fiber – Decorative, Fiber – Wearable, Glass, Jewelry, Leather, Metal, Mixed Media, Sculpture and Wood.

This year’s featured artist, Laura Baring-Gould, works with elemental ingredients including bronze, paper, salt, beeswax, fabric, and wood to create sculptures that transform impermanent objects into talismans of experience. Her scientific background informs the process of making and working with metal through life-like detail of bronze casts of pears and birds’ nests – all hand-finished and colored with a hot patina. Heavily influenced by early childhood experiences in Alaska, the value of the land and its original inhabitants left a deep impression and lasting mark. Baring-Gould attended Oberlin College and Boston University School for the Arts where she studied biology, environmental studies, and art. In 2022, she received the Award of Excellence in Metal from the Philadelphia Museum. Her work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian Craft Show, Philadelphia Museum Contemporary Craft Show, and the American Craft Exhibition as well as residing in numerous public collections including the Boston Public Library and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.

The weekend of shopping begins with the Masquerade Ball Craft Show Preview Event, which will be held from 5:30-9:00 pm on Friday, October 27. Tickets will go on sale October 1. Attendees are urged to attend dressed in costume. The event will feature a collection of bespoke masquerade masks meticulously created by local artists, available for purchase or as an exclusive ticket add-on. Food, music, and libations will be offered throughout. Guests will also enjoy a fashion show featuring the skilled craftsmanship of jewelry and wearable fiber art pieces from talented artists in the Craft Show. The ticket price for the evening is $125 for Museum members and $150 for non-members. For a ticket with a custom-painted mask, tickets are $155 for members and $175 for non-members. All Preview Event tickets include unlimited re-entry to the show on Saturday and Sunday.

“We are very excited about our masquerade preview event this year, which adds a new layer of heightened fun and enthusiasm for our patrons!” says Jennifer Chrzanowski, Interim Director.

Returning this year is the Craft Show Marketplace on Saturday, October 26. Additional artist booths will be featured outside on South Street between the two show venues—the Academy Art Museum and the Waterfowl building. The street will be engaged with other activities including classes with Woodworks on Wheels, a hands-on, mobile woodworking studio, owned and operated by Mark Freibaum, and wine tasting and charcuterie board design classes with Piazza Italian Market. Patrons can register in advance for classes on the Academy website which includes entry into the Craft Show all weekend.

New this year is the Craft Show Sunday Brunch, offered on October 27 from 10 am-1 pm. Get a head start on your day of shopping in the Craft Show Festival tent for a delightful morning of food and drinks. Indulge in a gourmet buffet, along with freshly brewed coffee and a selection from our Bloody Mary and Mimosa bar. Tickets are $40 for AAM Members and $50 for non-members and includes admission into the show.

Woodworks on Wheels will also be hosting the free Little Crafters session on Sunday, October 27 at 1-3 pm. Children will learn the basics of woodworking and how to use a variety of tools in an assembly line style class, and at the end, will graduate with a golden hammer!

The hours for the Craft Show are 10 am-5 pm Saturday, October 26, and 10 am-4 pm Sunday, October 27. Patrons will be able to vote for their favorite artist for the Craft Show People’s Choice Award which will be given on Sunday morning to the artist with the most votes. Admission to the Craft Show is $10 per Museum member and $12 for non-members, which includes a Craft Show tote bag.

Craft Show Board Chair Diz Hormel says, “It has been an honor to chair the Craft Show for the past 4 years.  This year promises to be our most dynamic show yet with over 70 top artists featuring renowned sculptor Laura Baring Gould, an outdoor market place, great food by Piazza and interactive workshops. There is something for everyone, and we look forward to seeing our neighbors at this fun and inspiring community event.”

For those interested in sponsoring the Craft Show, please contact the Museum. All proceeds from fees, ticket sales, and generous community sponsorships directly support the Museum’s mission of providing meaningful art experiences and education to the Mid-Shore.

The Zebra Gallery Welcomes New Artists

September 5, 2024 by The Spy Desk

Pictured is OERDY painting one of his zebra paintings, which will be exhibited at the Zebra Gallery in Easton from October 1 through 31, with an opening reception on Friday, October 4, 2024, from 5 to 7 p.m.

The Zebra Gallery at 5 N Harrison Street in Easton is welcoming artist Erdmann “OERDY” Hummel whose work will be on display from October 1 through October 31 with an opening reception on Friday, October 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. to meet the artist.

Hummel has an extraordinary story. While in prison in East Germany in 1988 for attempting to escape by going over – or around – the Berlin Wall, Erdmann Hummel read that zebras over millennia have never been domesticated. He found himself saying, “Be a zebra,” which became his mantra while in prison. A year later, the Berlin Wall came down. Erdmann started a career in journalism and produced documentaries. He covered the first free elections in the east as a reporter for Germany’s leading news channel N24 (now “Welt”). Six years ago, Hummel took on the name of OERDY for his second life as an artist and considers the zebra to be a symbol of freedom.

According to Susan Schauer John, owner of Zebra Gallery, “We are so pleased to have OERDY with us to share his artistic visions of zebras in all their glory.”

It is fitting that Hummel would showcase his work at The Zebra Gallery in Easton Maryland.  Susan Schauer John, owner and curator of The Zebra Gallery named the gallery in honor of her grandson who has an inherited condition known as Ehler’s Danlos Syndrom (EDS).  The symbol for the non-profit Ehlers-Danlos Society is the zebra.  10% of all profits from gallery sales go directly to The Ehlers-Danlos Society. (https://www.ehlers-danlos.com/).

Artists currently featured in the Zebra Gallery include Howard Lapp, Adam Himoff, Thyra Moore, Diane Ferguson, Steve Walker, Ingrid Matuszewski, Bernie Houston, Terance Young, Jen Sterling, Gabriel Lehman, Leslie Giles, Larry Ringgold, Maire McArdle, Susan Fay Schauer, Sheryl Southwick, Carol Newmeyer, Cindy Winnick, Gina Jacklin, Nikolay Naydenov, May Klisch, Mitzi Bernard, Karen Merkin, David Dunn, and Mischella Willbricht.

The Zebra Gallery address is 5 N Harrison Street, Easton, MD (across the street from the Historic Tidewater Inn). For further information, visit www.thezebragallery.com.

Mary-Land Scapes, Photography and Watercolor by Beth Horstman and Joan Machinchick, on view through October at Adkins Arboretum

September 5, 2024 by Adkins Arboretum

“bloomingdale 2019” by Beth Horstman is among the works in Mary-Land Scapes, Horstman’s show with Joan Machinchick on view through Oct. 26 at Adkins Arboretum.

Whether with a simple cornstalk or a vast iconic shoreline, artists Beth Horstman and Joan Machinchick evoke the beauty, wildness and peace—indeed the complexity—of Maryland’s environmental riches. Their exhibit, Mary-Land Scapes, runs through Oct. 26 at Adkins Arboretum, with a reception to meet the artists on Sat., Sept. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Through the mediums of watercolor and photography, both artists explore the shared experience of natural space within our common surroundings. To immerse oneself in this exhibit is to connect with the deep nourishment that nature offers to all of us as we move through our daily lives.

Beth Horstman reflects, “The photographs I chose for this exhibit are a collection of what, I feel, is a taste of the area, for the Eastern Shore, and Maryland’s history that feeds my soul and creates a mood of soft visual calm.”

Joan Machinchick, whose practice also includes a host of related artistic disciplines, states, “The inspiration for my art is the constantly changing beauty and color, unity and diversity of all things in the natural world: the trees, sky and seasons, the wild gardens…the gentle Chesapeake Bay and the line where the water meets the shore and the earth comes alive.”

This show is part of Adkins Arboretum’s ongoing exhibition series of work on natural themes by regional artists. It is on view through October 26 at the Arboretum’s Visitor’s Center located at 12610 Eveland Road, near Tuckahoe State Park in Ridgely. Contact the Arboretum at 410-634-2847 ext. 100 or [email protected] for gallery hours.

A 400 acre native garden and preserve, Adkins Arboretum provides exceptional experiences in nature to promote environmental stewardship.
