The Foundation of HOPE (Helping Others Prosper & Excel) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping middle school girls lead productive lives in their communities by providing cultural, social, and educational development.  On December 14th, the Foundation is hosting its Annual Luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay in Cambridge to thank and celebrate its supporters.

The festivities, led by Master of Ceremonies Jordie Clark from ABC 47 WMDT, will kick off at 11:30 am, as guests network while looking for the perfect holiday gifts among a curated selection of silent auction items.   The auction will feature incredible items from Piazza Italian Market, Nelson Coleman Jewelers, La De Da, Rise Up Coffee, a stainless-steel grill from Lowe’s and many more.

Attendees will then enjoy a delicious lunch, followed by a presentation by the Foundation of HOPE’s President, Keasha Haythe.  Haythe will give supporters an update on the educational opportunities made possible for this year’s participants in the Foundation’s Economic Development and Empowerment Program.

Three local organizations – APG Media of the Chesapeake Women to Watch, Easton Middle School, and Women Who Care Talbot County – will receive much-deserved recognition for their program support.  In addition, Haythe will share the latest developments in the Foundation’s HOPE Center building project.  Guests will also hear from this year’s Foundation of HOPE scholarship recipients, Kaleigh Hammond and Mikayla Gibson.

Finally, guests will have the opportunity to hear from keynote speaker, Dr. Trudy Hall, the Chief Medical Officer at TidalHealth and member of the Foundation of HOPE Board of Directors.  Dr. Hall has known she wanted to care for people since she was six years old.  While she was in medical school, her father underwent a serious medical emergency, and his recovery led her to choose physical medicine and rehabilitation as her specialty.  Dr. Hall finds her new role as Chief Medical Officer incredibly rewarding, as it allows her to positively affect thousands of patients at a time.  The Foundation looks forward to Dr. Hall’s inspiring words.

Tickets for this heartwarming community event are on sale now.  Those wishing to attend can register online at foundationofhopemaryland.org/annual-luncheon.

Cambridge Celebrates 75th Annual Christmas Parade with a Diamond Dazzle

November 22, 2024 by The Cambridge Spy

The 75th annual Cambridge-Dorchester County Christmas Parade, one of the largest nighttime Christmas parades in the state, kicks off at 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 7th, 2024, with pre-parade entertainment provided by artist Rebecca Bailey starting at 4:15 pm at the reviewing stand located at Craig’s Drugstore parking area. The parade can be viewed on High Street, Poplar Street, and Race Street, ending at Washington Street.

This year’s parade is themed “A Diamond Parade” in celebration of this cherished holiday tradition reaching its 75th anniversary. Spectators can enjoy a dazzling procession of lights, music, marching bands, school groups, dance teams, and festive floats along High, Poplar, and Race Streets in historic downtown Cambridge.

“The parade has become a beloved tradition, marking the official kickoff to the holiday season,” says Bruce McWilliams, Parade Chairman. “We’re excited to bring this surge of excitement to our community once again, thanks to the incredible support of our volunteer committee and generous donors, which has been in full swing since 1946.”

The parade attracts thousands to the streets of downtown Cambridge, all who bustle to see and enjoy the festivities.

“Our event is one of few that I am aware that is 100% volunteer organized and funded completely by private donors,” comments Bruce McWilliams, Parade Chairman. “Our committee is honored to once again have the ability to bring this surge of excitement to our visitors and citizens, and it’s all thanks to the people and businesses that support us every year. Without the support of our donors, the parade would cease to exist.”

This year’s parade promises to be a real treat! Nine marching bands have registered, including the return of crowd favorites Bowie State University and the Symphony of Soul. “There are a ton of floats and dance teams that have entered, and it’s looking to be a quality parade” says McWilliams.

The Cambridge-Dorchester County Christmas Parade is a 100% volunteer-run, non-profit event. Donations to this 501(c)(3) are tax-deductible.  To join the tradition as a sponsor or participant, visit our website at www.christmasparade.org For questions, contact Bruce McWilliams at 443-521-1671 or [email protected], or visit the event webpage for general information.

One Mission Cambridge expands 2nd Annual Thanksgiving Community Dinner

November 20, 2024 by The Spy Desk

This year’s 2nd Annual Thanksgiving Community Dinner will be bigger than ever. The event, to be held on Monday, November 25 at 1 p.m. at the Cambridge Wesleyan Church at 803 Race Street in Cambridge, hopes to serve 400 people.

By partnering with new partners, the Cambridge Police Department, the Cambridge Wesleyan Church, Carmela’s Cucina, and Garden Church, One Mission Cambridge and its existing partners, Taqueria Floritas and Simmons Center Market, along with the help of the community, hopes to reach even more individuals this holiday season by offering one “sit-down” or one “to-go” meal per person options.

“We are so pleased with all of the new partners, donors, and volunteers who have come together this year to make this event happen. We reached over 300 people last year and hope to reach even more this year. It takes a village, and we are grateful to our Cambridge community for their continued generosity in helping to meet the needs of our most vulnerable community,” states Krista Pettit, Director of One Mission Cambridge.

Antoine Patton of the Cambridge Police Department, one of the new partners with the event, shares that for the past 10 years, the Cambridge Police Department has been supplying families with Thanksgiving meals to cook.  They wanted to do more, so for the past three years we have been doing a Thanksgiving dinner and each year have fed over 300 community members. He shares, “This year we partnered with One Mission because we realized that by working together, we could make this dinner bigger and better.”

“The Thanksgiving dinner is important to our community because in this day and time unfortunately everyone cannot afford to purchase dinner with the rising cost of food and some of our senior community live off of a fixed income. We at the Cambridge Police Department want to be a blessing to those who are in need.  Also, there are others who would be spending Thanksgiving alone and this is an opportunity for them to have dinner with other members of our community,” he adds.

According to Chris Rojas, owner of Taqueria Floritas in Cambridge, his restaurant will cook 18 to 20 turkeys purchased through Simmons Center Market, as well as prepare the mashed potatoes and gravy. Carmela’s Cucina supplies the side dishes, and local churches donate the desserts. A number of the partners are also supplying volunteers to staff the event. The purchase of food for the meal is made possible by community donations.

“Thanksgiving spirit is about coming together. It’s a chance to say hello to our neighbors and tell them that we see them and we care. It’s also a way to bridge the gap between community members. A warm meal is all it takes,” states Rojas.

For further information about the Thanksgiving meal, visit onemissioncambridge.org.

One Mission Cambridge is open Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, from 1 to 5 p.m. for services. For additional information visit onemissioncambridge.org, Facebook, or Instagram. Donations can be made to One Mission Cambridge, P.O. Box 1495, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Talbot County announces new Director of Corrections, Joseph Hughes

November 13, 2024 by Talbot County Government
Leave a Comment

Talbot County is pleased to announce the promotion of Joseph Hughes as its new Director of Corrections, succeeding retiring Director Terry Kokolis. After an extensive and impactful career, Director Kokolis is stepping down, leaving the department in the capable hands of Hughes.

Joseph Hughes began his career in corrections in 1995 as an entry-level correctional officer at the Dorchester County Detention Center. During his 22-year tenure there, he advanced to the role of shift supervisor, overseeing a range of programs, including work initiatives, re-entry, and the classification of incarcerated individuals. In 2021, he joined the Talbot County Detention Center as an Administrative Captain, working under Director Kokolis. In 2023, Hughes was promoted to Deputy Director, preparing him for his current role as Director.

“This promotion is a well-deserved recognition of his commitment, leadership, and expertise,” said County Manager Clay Stamp. “We are confident Joe will continue to lead our corrections team with integrity and a focus on safety and rehabilitation.”

When asked about his new role, Hughes shared, “The most rewarding aspect of our profession is knowing that what we do makes a positive impact on the lives of both those who are incarcerated and our staff. It’s fulfilling to see past incarcerated individuals express their gratitude for the positive changes in their lives and to know I’ve played a role in mentoring new officers.”

Reflecting on his career, Hughes credits Director Kokolis as a significant influence. “Throughout my career, I have had the privilege to learn from some excellent leaders, but Director Kokolis stands out. His vast knowledge and experience in corrections has been invaluable in shaping my approach as an administrative leader, beyond day-to-day operations.”

Talbot County Council President Chuck Callahan emphasized the importance of corrections in keeping the community safe. “Our corrections department is a big part of keeping Talbot County safe,” said Callahan. “By helping people get back on track and supporting our officers, corrections makes a difference. I know Joe will do a great job leading this team.”

Hughes is also an advocate for various correctional programs that provide incarcerated individuals with new skills, helping them re-enter society as productive citizens. “Programs give individuals the tools they need to succeed. It’s crucial that we continue to support and expand these initiatives,” he emphasized.

Ultimately, Hughes’ philosophy centers on treating everyone with compassion, respect, and professionalism. “Throughout my career, I have always followed one simple rule: treat everyone like human beings. We should strive to be compassionate, respectful, and professional at all times,” he shared.

As he takes on this leadership role, Talbot County looks forward to continued growth, innovation, and excellence in its correctional services under Joseph Hughes’ guidance. To learn more about the Department of Corrections, visit talbotcountymd.gov/corrections.
