Engaging Street Mural to Enhance Safety Measures on Love Point Road in Stevensville

A vibrant and engaging street mural is set to grace Love Point Road in Stevensville, serving not only as a captivating artistic expression but also as a tool to enhance traffic safety in downtown Stevensville. Spanning approximately 125 feet from the stop sign on Love Point Road (in front of Peace of Cake) towards Route 18, this mural promises to infuse color into the community while addressing traffic concerns.

Scheduled to commence on Monday, May 6, and continue until May 17, 2024, this initiative will entail a partial road closure with no-thru traffic along the eastbound lane of Love Point Road, from Route 18 to East Main Street. The closure will be effective Monday through Friday, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The completed work each day will be dry and ready for traffic by 4:00 PM, pending favorable weather conditions. Work will not be done on days when it is raining.

Businesses on this stretch of road will be open for businesses and the businesses and residences will be accessible by the westbound lane of Love Point Road.

The project is strategically planned for completion just in time for the Annual Kent Island Days, slated for Saturday, May 18, 2024. Its realization is made possible through the support of a Safety Grant from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, highlighting a collaborative effort to enhance community well-being.

“We recognize the importance of this project in not only enriching our streetscape but also in prioritizing safety measures for our residents and visitors,” said Heather Tinelli, Director of Economic and Tourism Development “We extend our sincere appreciation for the community’s patience and understanding throughout this endeavor.”

For further information or concerns regarding the project, please contact Heather Tinelli, Director of Queen Anne’s County Economic and Tourism Development, at (410) 604-2100 or [email protected].

Learning About Essential Oils

Dorinda Adams to share her knowledge of essential oils with the Chesapeake Bay Herb Society meeting on May 9th

Come learn about essential oils and their uses at the May 9 meeting of the Chesapeake Bay Herb Society at Christ Church Parish Hall, Easton. Dorinda Adams will share her knowledge of these oils, which are concentrated plant extracts that capture the natural smell and flavor of their sources.

Dorina Adams was introduced to essential oils in 1997 when her co-workers asked her if she knew of a trainer on the topic.  That request opened the door for her to begin exploring how to use essential oils for her own well-being.  In the fall of 2005, she was introduced to Mikael Zayat, M. Ed., Master Aromatherapist, and her self-directed study became formalized.  She attended over 51 hours of training with him.

Dorinda began providing workshops and individual consultations on using aromatherapy in 2007.  She has continued to use essential oils in her daily life and has found them to be a valuable option and supplement to her overall wellness.  While she cannot take credit for coining the term “The Nose Knows,” she uses it in her workshops as her tagline.

The society will meet at 6 p.m. at Christ Church Parish Hall, 111 S. Harrison Street, Easton.  Meetings include a social period, an herbal potluck dinner, a short business meeting, and a presentation on an herb-related topic.  The theme for May is a Greek mix.

CBHS was formed in 2002 to share knowledge of herbs with the local community.  The group maintains the herb garden at Pickering Creek Audubon Center.

For more information, call (410) 763-8843 or visit the Society’s Facebook page.

Rick Culotta as Town Crier

On Friday, May 24, 2024, beginning at 12:00 noon the Talbot Historical Society, members of the Talbot County Council, and the Colonel Tench Tilghman Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) will commemorate and celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Talbot Resolves.

The Talbot Resolves was a proclamation made in front of the Talbot Courthouse 250 years ago on May 24, 1774 by a number of gentlemen declaring they would act “as friends to liberty, and to the general interests of mankind” in support of their brethren in Boston, Massachusetts as Great Britain was preparing to shut down the Port of Boston, in response to the Boston Tea Party that had occurred the year before on December 16, 1773.

During the 250th commemoration celebration of the Talbot Resolves, the following events are planned:

  • A representative of the Talbot Historical Society will welcome all those gathered on the courthouse lawn and distribute copies of the Talbot Resolves.
  • Mr. Richard Culotta, dressed as the Town Crier, will call all those in the vicinity of Talbot Courthouse to assemble on the front lawn as he reads a copy of the Talbot Resolves.
  • Mr. Pete Lesher, a member of the Talbot County Council, and direct descendant of Colonel Tench Tilghman, George Washington’s Aide-de-Camp, will provide an overview of this important historical event.
  • Wes Hagood, a member of the Colonel Tench Tilghman Chapter of the SAR, will talk about the actions taken by Matthew Tilghman, who was Colonel Tench Tilghman’s uncle, immediately after the Talbot Resolves were proclaimed.
  • Light Refreshments will be served by a member of the Talbot Historical Society, dressed in colonial garb, at the end of the commemoration celebration.

All are welcome to attend this 250th commemoration event and learn more about the importance of the Talbot Resolves.

Zebra Gallery Features New Artists

May 3, 2024 by The Spy Desk

Work by artist Thyra Moore lives on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and creates dimensional acrylic made from a variety of materials, including paper, glass, ceramic, and wood.

The Zebra Gallery at 5 N Harrison Street in Easton has welcomed several new artists to the gallery. According to Susan Schauer John, owner of Zebra Gallery, states, “I am so excited to have the work of these new artists in my gallery. Their work is fresh and new. I think it will resonate with the locals and visitors alike.”

Thyra Moore lives on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and creates dimensional acrylic made from a variety of materials, including paper, glass, ceramic, and wood. She completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from the renowned Tyler School of Art in Pennsylvania.

“With acrylics, I have the freedom to experience each step and stage of my art,” she said. “I can react with little or no preplanned outcome and take full advantage of the evolutionary process that’s hidden within each creative challenge.”

“My creative process involves recurring development and destruction. Without a preconceived plan, each action informs the next. There is a continual exchange between spontaneous and deliberate moves.”

Hollace Kutay of Pennsylvania and Tilghman is a clay artist who uses the ocean to inspire her work. She completed a BFA in ceramics at Pennsylvania State University and is the founder and Executive Director of the Ceramic Art & Culture Institute in Reading, Pennsylvania. The surreal creatures she creates are not trying to capture what is already in existence, but, instead, attempting to emulate a feeling and to connect the public with some of the great mysteries of the underwater world.

“Years ago, my art professor stared critically at my sea-urchin-inspired lidded jar. “Never replicate nature, Hollace.  It is impossible to compete with God.’  His words have stuck with me to this day.  Clay, the medium I have chosen to bring art into being is, in fact, from the earth.  The sediment buried deep below the sandy ocean beaches I have walked over a thousand times is the material that makes up my creations,” she states.

The final artist is Nikolay Naydenov from Lovech, Bulgaria.  According to John, Naydenov does simplicity and purity like no other artist we have seen.  His paintings provoke thought and interpretation.

“Where I live is what I am provoked and inspired by. Urbanization has not yet taken its toll on this place; nature has not yet loosened its grip on it. Away from highways and happenings, it tells a slow-time story,” he states.

“The paint, the canvas, the light and chaos in the studio… Such has been my life for years. Abstract painting lets me be free, open, and honest. Over time, I have come to aspire towards more and more restrictive means of expression, seeking liberation from accumulation and overabundance. “

You won’t want to miss the works of these amazing new artists. For further information, visit https://www.thezebragallery.com.

Shore Legal Access offers free expungement clinic at Grace Street

April 30, 2024 by The Spy Desk

A free legal clinic this month in Easton can help people with criminal convictions learn about wiping the slate clean.

Shore Legal Access, a non-profit that helps people who can’t afford representation in civil legal matters, has created an initiative for criminal record expungement with a focus on cannabis possession and use. A free clinic on expungement, including for cannabis, is set for Wednesday, May 15 at 2 p.m. at Grace Street, at 8262 Ocean Gateway, Suite 1. Expungement is a legal process of removing a criminal record from public view.

Laura Chafey, legal director at Shore Legal Access, is offering the session to help people learn about expungement and will offer intakes at the event.

“This presentation is intended to educate the community on which convictions are eligible for expungement and which are not, with an emphasis on cannabis-related charges, as well as explain the legal process of requesting and obtaining an expungement,” Chafey said.

Criminal convictions pose significant barriers, including employment opportunities, housing, education, and professional licensing. Recently, a new law – the REDEEM Act, cuts waiting times for several eligible expungements. And since Maryland legalized recreational cannabis in June, many use or possession convictions are now eligible for expungement.

As a recovery community organization that helps people heal from substance use, Grace Street’s certified peer recovery specialists often work with people who have criminal convictions. Offering this free legal clinic helps remove barriers to people working hard on sustaining healthy, sober lives within communities.

Shore Legal Access typically holds two expungement clinics each month across the shore. Learn more at shorelegal.org.

Grace Street opened in Easton in August of 2023 as the sole recovery community organization (RCO) on the Mid-Shore. An RCO is a non-profit organization founded and led by people with direct lived experience with substance use challenges and recovery.

As an RCO, Grace Street provides peer-based and other recovery support services; operates the region’s only harm reduction vending machine that includes Narcan, Fentanyl and Xylazine test strips; offers free harm reduction materials and services, including wound care; conducts weekly street outreach; provides resource connection and supports; provides life skills and workforce development, including peer recovery support training for certification; hosts support groups and fosters recovery-focused community education.

Grace Street is dedicated to saving lives and fostering healing for anyone affected by substance use. This is done by mobilizing resources within and outside of the recovery community, to increase the prevalence and quality of long-term recovery from alcohol and other drug addiction.

Grace Street serves people across the Mid-Shore. Referrals are not necessary, and services are free. The center is open weekdays and Sundays, 4 – 9 pm. and Saturdays, 2 – 7 p.m. Daytime hours vary. Anyone interested in volunteering or partnering can contact Kate Dulin, program director, at 410-690-7353 or visit GraceStreetRecovery.org. Supporters may donate directly online at GraceStreetRecovery.org.

Chesapeake Charities, a community foundation based in Stevensville, received a one-year grant from Maryland’s Office of Overdose Response to establish the Grace Street RCO.

This project is supported by the Maryland’s Office of Overdose Response. The views presented here are those of the grantee organization and not necessarily those of the MOOR, its Executive Director, or its staff.
