This early 20th-century photograph shows the Hooper Island Light Station, standing about three miles west of Hooper Island in the Chesapeake Bay. Built in 1902, the 63-foot “sparkplug” lighthouse guided ships around nearly 30 miles of dangerous shoals along the Bay’s eastern side. Its four-story iron tower contained living quarters for the keepers, storage areas, and the lantern room. The light was automated in 1961 and remains an active aid to navigation. The National Archives holds the photograph.
