Cambridge’s Main Street Gallery will showcase the work of local painter Laura Jenkins in its spring exhibition, “Sunrise to Sunset … and a Few Things in Between,” opening May 1.

Jenkins, who was raised on the Shore and now lives in Berlin, draws inspiration from the region’s landscapes. Her oil paintings reflect what she describes as the area’s “quiet marshes, open skies and dramatic sunsets.”

Although self-taught, Jenkins said she has been surrounded by art throughout her life. Both of her parents were artists, and she comes from a long line of artists through her Dutch heritage. She credits her development not to genetics, but to “curiosity, discipline and a genuine love of painting,” which she says have driven her ongoing commitment to observation and practice.

Jenkins often paints outdoors, working “en plein air” to capture changing light and atmosphere. She uses these studies as the basis for more detailed studio pieces.

“This process allows me to preserve the immediacy of emotion of the landscape while bringing depth and finish to each completed work,” she said.

The exhibition runs through June 28 at the gallery, 518 Poplar St., and will feature Jenkins’ work alongside that of the gallery’s member artists.

Artist receptions will be held on Second Saturdays, May 9 and June 13. The free events are open to the public and will include light refreshments.

The gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Artwork is also available online at mainstgallery.net.

Located in Cambridge’s arts and entertainment district, Main Street Gallery is the city’s only artist-owned and operated cooperative. The gallery is celebrating its 15th year and is currently reviewing work from prospective members and guest artists. More information is available at the gallery’s website or by calling 410-330-4659.
