Colonel James Wallace built the Greek Revival building at 301 Gay Street in 1852 to be his law office, and it is one of the earliest surviving commercial buildings in Cambridge. He also used it as a recruiting office when he was commander of the First Regiment of the Eastern Shore Infantry during the Civil War. Later, this was the spot from which he watched the packing operations of Cambridge’s first full-scale oyster cannery, a business he founded. By 1896, his son was one of the foremost packers on the Eastern Shore. It was an insurance office in the early 20th century and the headquarters of the Dorchester Educators in the 1970s.
