Despite a delayed school start, Maple Elementary School in Cambridge welcomed a distinguished group of visitors on Monday for an engaging stop on the U.S. Department of Education’s national History Rocks! Trail to Independence Tour.
U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon, joined by Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.) and his staff, Dorchester County commissioners, Cambridge Mayor Lajan Cephas-Bey, Dorchester County Public Schools Superintendent Jymil Thompson, and members of the Dorchester County Board of Education, toured the school before gathering fourth- and fifth-grade students for interactive educational activities celebrating America’s upcoming 250th anniversary in 2026.
The assembly kicked off with an inspiring a cappella performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” by student Katondra Jenkins, followed by remarks from tour organizers. Students eagerly demonstrated their knowledge under the guidance of emcee Dr. Donald Boyd, Director of Teaching and Learning for Dorchester County Public Schools.
One standout moment came when student Rian White confidently answered the question, “What is a quill?” impressing the entire audience.
Dr. Boyd led the group in fun, educational games using placards featuring the Maryland flag on one side and the American flag on the other. Students responded to history questions by raising the correct flag, answering most correctly—even stumping some adults in the room.
The excitement peaked in a friendly competition between fourth- and fifth-grade teams. The fourth graders emerged victorious, earning History Rocks! hats and well-deserved bragging rights heading into the winter break. The History Rocks! Tour highlights high-quality civics and history education across all 50 states, inspiring students to connect with America’s founding principles through hands-on learning. Maple Elementary’s enthusiastic participation showcased the strong civic instruction taking place in Dorchester County classrooms.
