Appleby was a 300-acre tract purchased from the Choptank tribe in 1726 by Henry Ennalls for 22 pounds of tobacco. The house evolved through various owners until Maryland Governor Thomas Holliday Hicks remodeled it into a Greek-revival style manor after acquiring it in 1858. It sits at the intersection of Race Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.
