In April 1912, the US Congress authorized the Treasury to buy a site in Cambridge for erecting a new post office. The place selected was at the southwest corner of Church and High Streets. The building was begun around August 1917 and completed on January 1, 1919. An expansion and renovations were carried out in 1935.
